Principles of Gestalt

In this project I used the Platelet typeface (created by Connor Mangat) in Adobe InDesign to create four illustrations that communicate the principles of gestalt. Those principles are similarity, proximity, continuance, and closure. To find out more about my inspirations behind the work and process of the illustrations, visit my dropmark.

Similarity - objects that are similar are perceived to be correlated. I used the X and O characters of the Platelet typeface in a pattern to demonstrate similarity.

Proximity - the distance between objects affects their perceived relativity. I used enlarged lowercase G Platelet characters to demonstrate proximity.

Continuance - visual direction that leads the eyes through the artwork. I used a varying size of A characters to demonstrate continuance through direction.

Closure - leaving spaces blank and allowing your mind to close off shapes on its own. I used two enlarged C characters to create closure.

The design for the record sleeve was created with multiple Platelet V characters to show the principle of continuance. The gold and orange colors are analogous.

The design for the vinyl was created with two enlarged Platelet J characters to show the principle of closure. The gold and orange colors are analogous.

The vinyl and sleeve together showing both principles of continuance and closure in their analogous color scheme.
